MAINTAINING SAFE AND SCECURE ENVIRONMENT IN HOSPITALITY

Brown et’ al. (1996:30) believes that security refers to all measures that are taken to protect a place or to ensure that only people with permission enter the premises are protected. Maintaining effective security should be the concern of everyone working within an establishment and is an essential part of good business practice. Forskett et’ al. (2003:17)goes on further to explain that maintaining effective security should be concerned of everyone working within an establishment and is an essential part of good business practice and  effective security practices can help to protect the profit of the business by loses through theft and  fraud. According to Jones (2002) the American President, George Bush, stated after the terrorist attack of 11 September 2001 that the ‘world has changed forever’. The effects of this event were a major and serious downturn in demand for hotel accommodation.

Hayter and Thomson (2005:29) state that everyone at work no matter how junior or senior their position, whether fulltime, part time and casual has a duty to protect the health and safety of those around them. The safety of all who work or visit an establishment should foremost in the mind of every one.  While one would be concerned about being in trouble with the law or losing their job, the fact is that most workplace are caused by unintentional, carelessness, forgetfulness or gradually falling in bad habit. The main part of an employer’s work is to carry out procedures and comply with regulation that have been designed to encourage good working practices and reduces the risk of injury to them self and others.

Jones (2002) illustrated that Safe and Security has been recognized as two of the five major challenges within the industry.
